17. MAI

Ja, vi elsker dette landet

(Yes, we love this land)

It was a tradition growing up to attend the Norwegian Constitution Day celebration 17th of May. Located downtown at the International Peace Gardens every year. (for more information check out their website www.utah17mai.com)

My Great Grandma Karly and Grandma came to America when my Grandma was 19. My Grandpa is from Denmark. All the kids on my dads side, all nine of us would sleep over at Grandma and Grandpa Larsen's house. Grandpa would wake us up early, after a sleepless night of giggles, to eat breakfast and get ready for the exciting celebration! It is one of my favorite memories with my Grandpa Larsen who has since passed away. His spirit carries on that is for sure. I see Grandpa in my dad more and more everyday.

It had been a few years since I had gone, but my Grandma invited my brother and me and the kids to go! This was a special year because I was able to dress up both Katie and Jeffrey in their Bunads (traditional Norwegian attire for special occasions). The one Katie wore is the one I wore as a little girl. Jeffrey wore the nickers and vest my Grandma's sister brought over from Norway when she visited a few years ago. We sure had a good time. It is especially fun to hear everyone speaking Norwegian. Norwegians are proud of their heritage and love to speak their language.

Hurra! Hurra! Hurra fra Syttende Mai! (Hurray! For the 17th of May!)
